What is Peyronie's Disease?

Peyronie’s disease is a disorder in which fibrous plaques develop within the penis, causing curvature and painful erections. Peyronie’s disease can be so severe that it could inhibit the ability to have sex. Peyronie’s disease affects up to 10% of men and becomes more common with age.

In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the penile curvature. The following surgeries are all performed in our ambulatory surgery center as a day procedure and the success rates are very high.

  • Penile Plication: Stitches are placed directly into the penile tissue on the opposite side of the plaque. This has the effect of bending the penis back into a straight position.
  • Incision and Grafting of Penile Plaque: In very severe cases with large plaques, this surgery involves removal of the scar tissue and replacing it with a graft of biological or synthetic material. This surgery carries the risk of erectile dysfunction.
  • Penile Implant: A penile implant can treat men with both erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease. The penile prosthesis will help straighten the penis. Learn more about penile implants.
